Dear Reader,
It is a pleasure to present this year’s volume of Between Arts and Science.
This edition brings together a range of work that reflects both the diversity of disciplines within the Faculty of Arts and Science and the depth of thought that undergraduate students are capable of producing. The articles in this volume engage with topics that are historical, literary, political, and cultural, while also raising broader questions about identity, representation, and the ways we understand the world around us.
Several contributions revisit historical narratives, from the complexities of Haiti’s political transition to the visual framing of Japanese-American internment through the lens of photography. Others turn to literature, examining themes of agency, gender, and social structures in 19th-century realist works, or exploring more unexpected perspectives, such as the destructive potential of music in medieval texts. Across these pieces, there is a clear willingness to question established interpretations and to approach familiar subjects from new angles.
This volume also reflects contemporary conversations. Discussions of gender identity and the limitations of binary frameworks, as well as reflections on artistic practice and self-representation, highlight the ways in which academic and creative work continue to intersect. Together, these contributions demonstrate not only strong disciplinary knowledge, but also a broader engagement with ongoing cultural and intellectual debates.
The process of assembling this volume required time, coordination, and sustained effort from everyone involved. I would like to thank the editorial team for their commitment throughout each stage of the process, and the authors for their patience and trust. Their work is what makes this publication possible.
At its core, this journal remains a space for undergraduate students to share their work and to participate in academic dialogue. It is a privilege to help bring that work forward, and to see it take shape in a publication such as this.
Thank you for taking the time to read this year’s edition.
